Welcome to Virtual Oakland

Hello and welcome to Sweet Caroline, a blog about Pitt Panthers football. If you don’t know why a site about Pitt football is called Sweet Caroline, leave. Now. Just kidding. But seriously.

For those of you who are still confused, Sweet Caroline is a song by Neil Diamond that the Pitt faithful have adopted as their own; it is sung between the third and fourth quarters of every home game. Here’s the link to the Diamond’s opus:

With that out of the way, here’s what you can expect from the site:

- Insight on Pitt football happenings

- Live blogging of Pitt games (whenever possible)

- Solid writing

- Strong opinions

- Hilarity ensuing

- Asshole “trolls” commenting.

Now, for our credentials:

Aaron McKrell (myself) is the site’s creator. No, I don’t go to Pitt. I go to school about two hours north- Edinboro University near Erie, Pa. However, I pride myself as the biggest Pitt fan who never went to Pitt. My father and uncle graduated with degrees from the university, and I visit the school multiple times a semester. My knowledge of Pitt football is extensive. Not to boast, but I am probably a bigger Pitt fan than a lot of the students who actually do go to Pitt. I also have friends who attend Pitt and thus can find out what is happening at pep rallies, with players on campus, etc. I may enlist in them to write. We’ll see.

I became a Pitt fan in the late 90s, but really I was born into it. I climbed Heart Attack Hill with my brother, grandfather, father and uncles and sat atop Pitt stadium through blizzards as Walt Harris’ teams got whooped by the likes of Miami and Syracuse. I witnessed on television the last game at Pitt stadium against Notre Dame, and clearly remember the kids jumping on the goalposts. I was there when Rutherford threw three redzone picks to lose to West Virginia, and I remember when vengeance occurred as Pitt beat WVU in Morgantown 13-9, spoiling there chance at a national championship game. I was also at this year’s opener against Buffalo (more on that later).

Of course, this site isn’t all about Pitt football. My former football teammate Nick Galich will be helping me from time to time with the NCAA football page, and I will be posting random, irrelevant videos, basically whenever I feel like it. As Nick and I have played football, we’re both knowledgeable about the game. Posts won’t come every day, but probably several times a week. Subscribe, and you’ll be notified of them by email.

One last thing: ENJOY!
